A 51-year-old man from Needville, Texas, Robert Martinez Jr. , has been sentenced to 21 months in federal prison for transporting 10 illegal aliens in hazardous conditions, the U. S.

Attorney's Office said. Martinez, who pleaded guilty on May 20, will also be subject to three years of supervised release following his prison term.

U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos handed down the sentence, taking into account the dangerous conditions under which Martinez transported the individuals. The court noted that two of the illegal aliens were concealed inside a storage compartment beneath four others, making it impossible for them to escape.

On March 9, Martinez drove a tractor-trailer to a Border Patrol checkpoint near Sarita, Texas. When questioned by law enforcement about his cargo, Martinez claimed he was transporting onions. However, a scan of the vehicle revealed anomalies in the tractor cab. Further inspection led to the discovery of 10 illegal aliens concealed in various locations inside the tractor-trailer, including on the top bunk, beneath a blanket on the lower bunk, and inside a storage compartment.

Authorities observed that those found inside the storage compartment were sweating and had flushed faces, indicating the perilous conditions they were subjected to. The illegal aliens identified Martinez as the driver of the tractor-trailer.

Martinez is currently in custody and will remain so until he is transferred to a Federal Bureau of Prisons facility. The investigation was conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations, with assistance from Border Patrol. Assistant U.

S. Attorney Izaak Bruce prosecuted the case.

This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration, dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protecting communities from violent crime.
